ACADEMY-AWARD WINNER PLAYWRIGHT TAKES THE STAGE
by the Associated Press ~
CONCORD, N.H.—New Hampshire playwright Ernest Thompson, who took an Oscar for the screen adaptation of “On Golden Pond” three decades ago, is playing a character in his award-winning creation for the first time.
Thompson plays Charlie the mailman in the stage production that runs through Aug. 12 at Pitman’s Freight Room in Laconia.
The 1981 movie netted Oscars for Thompson and lead actors Henry Fonda and Katharine Hepburn. It is the story of an aging couple at a lakeside cottage who are caring for the rebellious teenaged son of their estranged daughter’s fiancé. It was filmed largely at Squam Lake in Holderness.
Charlie is the loud, immature yet lovable character whose off-beat observations draw laughter.
Thompson says he based the character on a mailman he knew as a kid.
